Each Friday I’ll serve up a photo and give you the story behind it. This week, a photo of two participants from a panel discussion show of their certificates of appreciation.
There are few better ways to score points in Burkina Faso than presenting someone with a certificate of appreciation for attending a training or other organized event. In fact, in my colleague’s office there are just three items on display on his wall, and all are certificates of appreciation/attendance at various events (2 of them sponsored by Peace Corps).
And while I’m poking fun a bit at the tradition, it really goes to show how important it is to make sure people are recognized for their roles in important projects. We do this in the US as well, though not nearly enough. Just recently while back in the US on vacation I opened a small token from my former employer recognizing my effort in a near year-long engagement. How many companies are thoughtful enough to send something to a former employee? A little recognition can go a long way.
